The latest Disney On Ice show “Rockin’ Ever After” came to Newark’s Prudential Center last week (it’s now moved further up the Turnpike and is performing shows at the IZOD Center), and my family got the chance to take in all the action courtesy of tickets we won from Macaroni Kid!
Disney condensed four of their most popular stories to create “Rockin’ Ever After” on ice. Mickey and Minnie Mouse make a grand entrance to start the show, quickly followed by Donald Duck and Goofy. The premise is that they’ve searched the globe looking for the hippest and hottest acts to perform in a sensational talent showcase.
The show features Disney Princesses Ariel from “The Little Mermaid,” Rapunzel from “Tangled,” Merida from “Brave” and Belle from “Beauty and the Beast”. Their tales are beautifully choreographed together into major production numbers featuring classic Disney songs. The sparkly costumes, delightful sets, and whimsical props really transformed the ice rink into mini-movie sets for each of the stories.
Disney On Ice “Rockin’ Ever After” is an action-packed show. It includes not only Disney Princesses, but also their leading men such as Gaston and The Beast and many other recognizable Disney characters including Sebastian, Flounder and Lumiere. I was surprised at the many spins, jumps and lifts the skaters performed. There is even an aerial act!
I would occasionally peek over at my five year old son and three year old daughter to check out their reaction. At times they sat motionless with their eyes in wide in wonder watching the show. At other times they clapped, cheered, and waved their Disney light toys/sabers. When the show was over I asked them what they thought, and they asked if we could come back the next day to see it again.
The show lasts a little over two hours with one short intermission about halfway through. You should also make sure you arrive early. There are a number of activities (these cost extra) for the kids including face painting and taking photos in front of a Disney castle. I would recommend dressing for the occasion; kids are encouraged to dress up in their favorite Disney character to enjoy the show!
If you can fit it into your schedule, I highly recommend this show. Tickets for the IZOD Center performances (thru November 25) are still available and range from $15 and up. If you have smaller children, like myself, you should opt for one of the daytime shows at either 11 am or 3 pm. The 7:30 offering is definitely a late night for little ones.
Disney On Ice “Rockin’ Ever After” was a great show for the entire family. I’m already looking forward to next year’s show to see how they will outdo themselves!
