Learning About Teen Skincare and Makeup at Esthetica MD, Englewood

By Lisa Pisano June 20, 2013

A group of 10 teenager girls and a few parents gathered in the ultra-chic lounge space of Esthetica MD in Englewood, New Jersey last Thursday to get the scoop on keeping their young skin radiant and fresh while also learning makeup application tips and tricks by the resident Aesthetic Stylist, Karlene Damallie (pictured on the right below, along with Medical Aesthetician Carol Bustamante on the left and owner Sophia Rabkin in the center).

Make no mistake - these girls LOVE makeup.  And they ADORE Karlene.

When asked how they heard about the teen makeup event at Esthetica MD, several of them replied, “Karlene did my makeup for my prom – she’s awesome!”

And after spending an hour hearing her makeup application tips and approach to creating a clean, age-appropriate teenage face, it’s evident that these girls know a quality makeup artist when they spot one.

Quality
is the key ingredient when it comes to everything at Esthetica MD. The three-month young medi-spa provides the highest quality, safest, minimally invasive, age-reversing facial aesthetic medical procedures (think peels, fillers, collagen). Esthetica MD also provides acne treatments and makeup application services to its clientele, which is mainly why it hosted this great event geared toward teenage girls.

The group first heard from Esthetica MD resident Medical Aesthetician, Carol Bustamante (pictured above). Bustamante reminded the girls that “makeup only looks good on the skin that it’s on.” And she underscored the importance of a solid skin cleansing regimen, which includes properly identifying skin type, exfoliation, diligent sun care and NOT picking at pimples (she urged the girls to try using an overnight enzyme mask instead.)

As French jazz music and hip beats pumped out of the spa speakers, girls were then treated to an interactive presentation with Karlene.  Karlene used the event guests such as Alexis (see above) to demonstrate concepts like how to properly fill-in eyebrows and the best way to layer bronzer and blush.  The girls especially got a kick out of Karlene showing them how NOT to wear bronzer and blush, which brought forth a lot of giggles.

Karlene was really great about sharing her product picks, from her preferred brands of brushes (she favors NARS #5 and #12) and shadows (Urban Decay Naked 2 – the perfect day-to-dressy palette) as well as where to buy them (she LOVES Sephora for teenage girls but also favors the beauty counters of Nordstrom and Bloomies.)

Attendees left the event with more than just a goodie bag.  They came away with a few more makeup tips than they knew going in.  Here are a few of Karlene’s Tips for a Healthy Teenage Glow:
  • Drink LOTS of water.
  • Always wear sunscreen – try a tinted moisturizer with SPF.
  • Apply eye makeup first and under-eye concealer last to prevent darkness left by loose shadow.
  • Use a brow gel to give eyebrows a “finished” look.
  • Apply tinted moisturizer with a brush instead of a sponge to save product (and money!).
  • Blush with a shimmer keeps a glow on youthful skin – avoid matte powders and blushes which can be cakey and dull.
  • Apply blush first and THEN bronzer – bronzer mimics where the sun would naturally hit you
Karlene's most important tip was probably the importance of removing all makeup at the end of the day before heading to bed.  Karlene’s go-to product? Neutrogena Disposable Makeup Removal Towels.
