Bergen County Model Railroad Club Open House in Hillsdale

A Macaroni Mom's Visit

By Jennifer Bermejo December 19, 2013
This weekend, my oldest son and I braved the chilly elements to check out the Bergen County Model Railroad Club's exhibit on the 2nd floor of the Hillsdale train station. When I heard about the show, I decided to check it out for one big reason: my son loves trains. Steam engine, diesel engine, wooden track, plastic, metal, Thomas or Percy. You name it, we own it or at least talk about it a dozen times daily. Obviously, heading out in to the brisk unknown to see this exhibit was top of our priority list this weekend and it did not disappoint.

Upon entering the station, the miniature scenes & speedy trains were laid out in what I would imagine Santa's workshop might look like at this time of year, especially in the mind of my son. I was just as surprised (and actually as excited) as he was to see a number of trains that we didn't have or had not seen before ! It didn't take us long to warm up to the sound of the trains whooshing down the tracks as our eyes and imaginations feasted on the scene that the Bergen County Model Railroad Club had created. This year the set-up included a new 3rd level, the traditional American Flyers, Subway cars, and of course, Thomas the Train. With this, we we left smiling from foot plate to fender.

The multitude of trains and scenes are owned and operated by the generous club members and are on display twice a year to the public for free at the Hillsdale station. The members working the event at the time of our visit, as pictured, were superb and more than willing to share great detail about their passion to the attendees. In addition, if you missed it this weekend, there is an annual larger scale show at the Pearl River United Methodist Church for a limited showing starting February 15th - March 2nd.
For more information on the Bergen County Model Railroad Club, check out their website - www.bcmrrc.com. The club is a mix of older gentlemen and a younger generation of model train enthusiasts. Members meet on the second Friday of each month in the same 2nd floor room of the Hillsdale train station. For a nominal fee of $15 a year to join, you can gain behind the scene access and share your appreciation for such a beloved past time for young and old alike.
