A T-riffic Time at Field Station: Dinosaurs

A Macaroni Kid Review and Ticket Giveaway! (sponsored)

By Angeline Sheridan June 5, 2014
My mini palentologists had a great time visiting Field Station: Dinosaurs in Secaucus last year. Naturally, when we were invited to come back during Opening Day, we jumped at the chance. (Keep reading to enter to win a family four pack of tickets to go to Field Station: Dinosaur)

When you travel back in time 9 million years ago, not much changes in a year except the perspective of the spectators. I loved that both my son, who is almost 5, and my daughter, who is 2 and a half, got a kick out of identifying the dinosaurs they discovered throughout the park.

They also were able to participate in more of the park's activities. They worked up a sweat digging for fossils at the giant Fossil Dig Site.

They colored their own Jurassic paradise.

And they even sat through the highly entertaining and educational Troubadour show at the Amphitheater.

We took a break from the heat by heading for the Commander's Tent. We read some books and got a close-up look at a dino claw with one of the Field Station: Dinosaur guides - cool!!

Macaroni Tips:

Bring plenty of bug spray, water, and sunscreen!

The trails are gravel, not paved, and you have to walk around a bit to see all the dinosaurs. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes (no heels).

Plan on staying for at least 3-4 hours to take advantage of the different shows and activities scheduled throughout the day.

Pack a lunch and snacks. There are plenty of picnic tables by the concession stands.

If you have small children, skip the Dinosaurs Alive! 3D movie, which could be too loud, dark and startling for kiddos 5 and under.

Children ages 2-3 will not understand that the dinosaurs are not real. Pretend to be excited to see the dinosaurs. I made the mistake of pretending to be scared of the first dinosaur we saw, and it really freaked out my daughter. She eventually came around, but it took about 20 minutes of her clinging to me before she eventually relaxed again.
