Making Sustainable Living Commonplace

At Unilever we believe sustainable living starts at home.

So in 2010 we launched our Sustainable Living Plan. It has 3 big goals to be achieved by 2020:
  • Help over 1 billion people improve their health and wellbeing.
  • Halve the environmental footprint of our products, not just when we make them but when people use them in their homes.
  • Source 100% of our agricultural raw materials sustainably and enhance the livelihoods of people across our value chain.
  • These are ambitious targets and reaching them won’t be easy. What is clear is that we can’t achieve them on our own, which is why working with other people and organizations is so important to us.
So far Lifebuoy has reached 119 million people with soap handwashing programs which help reduce diarrhoeal disease and Unilever Pureit has helped 45 million people gain access to safe drinking water with our in-home water purifiers.

We’ve reduced CO2 emissions in our factories by 40% and helped consumers cut theirs with products such as concentrated detergents and dry shampoos. And over a third of our agricultural raw materials are now sustainably grown.

More than half our factories around the world now send zero non-hazardous waste to landfill, all of them will achieve this by 2015. Our factory in South Africa collects rainwater on its roof, reducing the need to use mains water, and 30 of our factories now use bio-energy.

We’ve still got a way to go and we can’t get there without your help.
