New Local Co-Op Offers Farm-Fresh Eggs, Lamb, Rabbit and Chicken

By Tanya Quirk January 22, 2015
Are you a Bergen County mom who is concerned with where your food comes from? Well I am, and I started the Black Willow Pond Farm Co-Op buying from a local farm in Cobleskill, New York. Four years ago, I started buying food from Black Willow Pond Farm, and the taste is just so amazing!

"Farmer Carrie", as my 3 ½ year old calls her, is a single mom raising two boys, running a farm, and teaching animal science at SUNY Cobleskill. She takes pride in her farm and has taught me so much about animals, farming, and what all the silly labels in the supermarket mean and how many are misleading. She is always willing to answer questions about the farm, how the animals are raised, etc. and loves to educate people on the science of farming and animals. It has been a wonderful learning experience for my daughter and my entire family. My 3 ½ year old now understands that food just doesn’t appear…a lesson you don’t get in the supermarket.

On a recent trip to a local specialty grocery store, I have found the farm prices to be comparable if not better for the quality and freshness!

Black Willow Pond Farm lamb is grass-fed AND locally raised at $10 per pound compared to imported lamb.

Black Willow Pond Farm lamb loin chops are $12 per pound AND grass-fed.

Fresh pasture-raised eggs from Black Willow Pond Farm are $4.50 a dozen compared to $7.99 at the grocery store.

Here's how the co-op works:

Join our Facebook Group Black Willow Pond Farm Co-Op to learn more about the co-op, see pictures of the farm, products, swap recipes, and find out when the next pick up dates are.

Place your orders online at www.blackwillowpondfarm.com. In the “Store” please click “Bergen Co. NJ Co-op.” You will see all the available products with the price per pound listed. When you add to your cart, it will show up as $0 because weights vary.

I drive up to the farm at least once a month to pick up pasture-raised eggs, 100% grassfed lamb, rabbit, chicken, and pork to bring back to Bergen County. (Currently the chicken and pork are out of stock, but the farm is now taking preorders for chicken, which will be available in May.)

Once I pick up, I email you your exact total and schedule a time to pick up your purchase in Tenafly. There is a 10% transportation fee added to help cover gas.
