Q. My skin feels so dry this time of year. What can I do?
A. Dry skin is common when the weather is cold and dry. There are several things that you can do to keep your skin well-hydrated. After you wash your hands during the day, apply a fragrance-free, light cream.
When you shower, use Dove soap or a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water. Limit your shower time to less than 10 minutes. Apply cream right after you get out of the shower to lock in moisture.
If the skin on your hands is very dry and cracked, apply a heavy moisturizing cream or Vaseline Petroleum Jelly (without additives) to your hands at night and then slip on cotton gloves. That way, the moisture can be absorbed as you watch television or sleep.

There are many great, affordable creams that you can find in stores such as Aquaphor, Eucerin, Cetaphil, and Cerave.
For children who are younger than six months, you can apply a small amount of Vaseline Petroleum Jelly (without additives).
In the fall and winter, the humidity levels are low which can contribute to dry skin. If the humidity level is less than 40% in your house, use a humidifier to add moisture to the air.
