Oh Baby! Choosing a Healthy Start for your Baby

There is nothing better than the smell and feel of a newborn baby. They are born perfect and innocent. No talking back, no loud music, no begging for an iPhone or a new car. But sadly, studies show that our perfect little babies actually are not born with a clean slate. (Keep reading for a chance to win a set of Beautycounter's NEW Baby Collection)

Babies are born “pre-polluted” with an average of 200 industrial chemicals (including mercury, PCBs and dioxins) and pollutants in the blood of their umbilical chords. Chemical exposures in the womb or during infancy can be dramatically more harmful than exposures later in life.

Babies are particularly vulnerable because of their rapid development and incomplete defense systems which is why we need to be the most diligent during their infancy. We may choose organic food. We may use BPA-free plastic bottles and sippy cups or even glass. We may even buy organic mattresses and chemical-free clothing, and we absolutely should only be putting the safest products on their delicate skin. Everything you put on your baby’s skin is absorbed into their body and should only be made with safe ingredients. That’s why today is a great day as Beautycounter, a leader in the safe personal care market, is introducing our latest product launch: Beautycounter Baby.

No more worrying about formaldehyde in baby products! (Remember last year when Johnson & Johnson admitted that it’s hugely popular No More Tears baby shampoo included formaldehyde, a chemical linked to cancer and also famous for its use in embalming dead bodies.) Beautycounter’s new baby line is made with simple ingredients that have been meticulously researched and tested. Beautycounter 's Baby Collection gently cleanses and protects delicate skin—and leaves Mom worry-free. According to our Head of Innovation, celebrity makeup artist Christy Coleman, “Babies are clean and pure—and they deserve products that are exactly the same. Unscented and uncomplicated formulas that deliver are the only skincare necessities your baby needs.”

Thankfully, companies like Beautycounter are starting to listen to Americans who are demanding safer products for their babies and children. Target just announced that they will be promoting organic and natural food brands more than traditional brands full of artificial chemicals. Lately, the Today Show has been featuring segments on how to read ingredient labels on personal care products. Social media is full of shared articles about what is safe and not safe anymore, including the chemicals in our sunscreen. Since it’s inception, Beautycounter’s mission has included taking our movement all the way to Washington D.C. to actually change the laws so that ALL Americans can have access to safe products. We shouldn’t have to scour labels to try to determine if a product is safe to use on our children.

So the moral of the story is while there are so many things to worry about as a new parent, small changes and small substitutions can make a BIG difference in the health and safety of your baby.
