Lidl, the "no frills, high quality" food market, opened its doors in Park Ridge this week. Located on Kinderkamack Road where the former Acme used to be, Lidl offers local shoppers a different experience than your typical big box grocery store.
Lidl, which originated in Germany, reflects its international roots. The store offers organic and conventional food items you would typically find in other grocery stores, interspersed with unique and usually European-based products like sauces and dipping oils.
I found their prices on organic produce very competitive with other local grocery stores, and the produce was very fresh.

The meat selection was not elaborate and limited to what most people would purchase: ground beef, chicken, steak cuts, and frozen seafood. But I was pleasantly surprised to see a lot of organic or grass-fed options at very reasonable prices.

The options in the store are mostly Lidl's own brand, which makes it great for the budget-conscious shopper. But if you are brand name shopper, this food market may not be for you. For example, on my recent visit, Lidl was stocked with store brand of paper towels and toilet paper for a good price. (Sorry, Bounty fans!)

The layout is more of an open market style, with lower shelves and wider aisles, allowing for more time to browse the aisles and discover something new and different. I really enjoyed discovering different chocolates and other sweet treats made in Switzerland.

Overall, I found the selection of items to be of high quality at reasonable prices, and unlike other big grocery stores, I wasn't overwhelmed with so many options - this is coming from someone who shops at multiple grocery stores for the best price and quality, especially for organic products!
