Kevin J. Duffy Memorial Essay Contest for High School Seniors Now Open

By Angeline Sheridan March 13, 2021

The Council of Irish Associations of Greater Bergen County announces the 2021 Kevin J. Duffy Memorial Scholarship Essay Contest for high school seniors. Since 2016, the annual contest raises awareness of Irish culture by posing essay questions related to a historical event that happened in Ireland a century prior to the contest year.

The Irish War of Independence, which began in 1919, ended in a controversial treaty between Great Britain and Ireland in 1921. The treaty granted Ireland the status of a Free State but did not give complete independence, and it separated six counties in Northern Ireland. This year's essay questions pertain to different aspects of Ireland's struggle for peace and freedom in 1921. To read the essay questions and rules, click HERE.

All high school seniors residing in Bergen County and intend to enter college are invited to participate. The first place winner of the essay contest will receive a $1,000 scholarship, and the second place winner will receive a $500 scholarship. Deadline to enter is April 21, 2021.
