Does your dad love the outdoors? Take him on a hike!

Stairway to Heaven
Where: 893 County Rd 517, Vernon, NJ

GatheringStairway is a beautiful and somewhat challenging trail for the outdoorsy dad. The “Stairway to Heaven” is up a series of steep rock slab steps to a panoramic view from Pinwheel’s Vista. If the word “stair” is in the name, climbing is involved. The scenic route, with over two miles of relatively flat boardwalk that crosses through marshland, ambles over stiles through cow pastures and near old railroad tracks. You can also tackle the seemingly straight uphill mile of rock slab “stairs” to the tippy top of Wawayanda Mountain. Make it to the top, the reward with amazing views of the Catskills, Pochuck Mountain, and Vernon Valley. Worth the hike!

Ramapo Mountain State Forest
Where: Skyline Drive, Oakland, NJ

Ramapo Mountain State Forest offers hikers miles of trails from meandering old roads to historic trails, to more challenging rock scrambles, the area offers something for outdoor enthusiasts of all skill levels. It offers a scenic 120-acre Ramapo Lake, ponds, streams, waterfalls, and marshes found within the forest. It provides the perfect habitat for birds and other wildlife species. The forest borders the Ramapo Mountain Reservation which is part of the Bergen County Park System. Easy strolls or challenging ones can be found.
